There’s more bad news for Toyota. On Tuesday April 13, 2010, Toyota suspended the sales of the GX 460 Lexus after a report from Consumer’s reports called the SUV a safety risk.
Consumer reports has a blog article on this finding. The problem occurs in a severe turn where the back slides out until it is almost moving sideways. The stabilization does catch eventually but way too late. If a wheel hit gravel or a curve the vehicle could roll over. Here’s the video from Consumer’s Reports.
As a result Toyota is testing the Lexus GX 460 in the same way that Consumer’s Reports test them.
In the US, the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration “advises drivers of the 2010 Lexus GX460 SUV to use care and caution.” This is another safety issue for Toyota / Lexus drivers. Apparently the US National Highway and Safety Traffic Administration does not even test vehicles as rigorously as Consumer’s Reports. This lacking will, no doubt, get debated in the months to come.
Another news alert about Toyota today is the report in the NY Daily news that Toyota routinely engaged in questionable, evasive and deceptive legal tactics when it was sued often claiming information was not available, when in fact it was. This behavior has allowed it to win lawsuits against individuals, who were often disabled due to the accident.
Toyota has spent millions on advertising and discounts to try to revive its reputation. There latest news releases are a severe blow to that effort. One has to wonder, what else is being hidden.
